A Step In The Right Direction

June 24, 2011 | 12 Comments

Class of 2011So it has been a while since I last updated my blog. And for once, I haven’t exactly missed it, being so busy! Between finals and getting ready for the summer and next year…End of the year craziness. It has been a long haul of classes, exams and good byes, because today
I graduated High School. I made it, I survived. High Honors.

What now? On to college.
It’s so strange, sad, exciting, bittersweet. You move on, meet new people, get to experience new things. It’s change.
I started packing my room up for college already. It’s hard to decide what to take, what to leave. I will be missing so many things. My dogs in particular! My mom’s home cooking. My old friends. Having my room to myself. My room. My house.

I wrote in so many people’s yearbooks. Many people write, ‘Have a great summer. Hope you are successful wherever life takes you…blah, blah blah…’ I wrote in a lot of my friend’s books. People who just right corny, generic statements write that. A lot of other people though write really memorable of funny, personal things. A couple of my friends wrote entire pages!
Friendships, relationships change over time. You find out who are really your true friends. The ones that make time in their busy lives to spend it with you. When it comes down to it it’s not the number of friends you have; most people are lucky of they have one solid friend in their entire life. I count myself lucky. I have two.

Most people earlier in the year asked, when they met me, “So Cara, where will you be going next year?” Thankfully I have that part figured out! Now though, it’s “Oh, what will you be specializing in? What will your major be? Do you know what you want to do for the rest of your life?” Like Hell I know!!! I have no clue what I want to study (hopefully I will find that all out). It’s just so…intimidating? It’s confusing, because so many people say that you don’t need to worry right now; that you have plenty of time! While others say that the earlier you know, the better. Hey, I guess it is a step in the right direction. I guess for me, it will all eventually fall in place. I just have so many interests and things that I might want to study! I have time.

I have moved on to something new. Bring on the change.

So, usually I don’t ask questions, but I would like to know what you think:
1. Where are you in school? College? High School? School is for losers?
2. If you’re in high school, are you excited about college? What do you aspire to do?
3. If you’re in college, is it everything you wanted or expected? What are you studying?
4. Do you know what you want to do? What profession you might have interest in? Why?

Congrats on finishing high school! Now you get a break. And after that, you’ll have a whole new set of ordeals to face.

    My answers to the questions:

    1) I just finished my third year of college. I will be graduating from college in a year and hopefully will attend graduate school after that. (So much school!)
    3) Is college what I expected? Yes and no. You’ll be able to predict some parts, and other parts you’ll never expect. It helps to plan ahead only after you’ve gotten the feel for what college life is like.
    4) I am going to work in robotics, and on that I am 100% certain. Robots are just that awesome.

About college, some people will tell you that you have plenty of time, and other people will tell you that it’s still not enough time, depending on their experiences. And quite frankly, you’ll figure it out. Maybe not in time to declare your major, but you’ll probably come out of college knowing exactly what you want to do. (Use freshman year to explore tons of things!)

Congrats on graduating high school! :D I’m so jealous! College will be a great experience. It’ll be a lot of hard work, but you’ll do great! It’ll be something new and different. You’ll meet and make some great new friends! I think that you’ll have a lot of fun. :)

    1) Sadly, I had to drop out of school cause we couldn’t afford it and I wasn’t getting the help I needed. Apparently all of my teachers were too stupid to realize that I had a learning disorder. :/ So instead of helping, they just failed me. Finally, I was just forced to drop out. So when I should be graduating from high school this year, I’m not. :( I’ve never even been to high school. So i’m really jealous of you! So lucky~

    2) Since all of my friends are getting ready for college and I was supposed to be too, I’ve already kind of decided what I want to go to college for. I want to go to college for like 10 different things. <.< Its hard to chose just one thing! I'm not really exciting about college, in fact, I think its kind of depressing. Like… cause… all my friends are going off to college and I'm not. :(

    3) not in college. lol

    4) I do know what I want to go to college for. However, I don't know exactly what I want to do in life. I have interest in like…. a ton of different things, but I'm not sure that I would want to get a real job in any of the things I'm interested in. :/ I just don't know. :(

Anyways! In reply to your comment from like a while ago; Sadly, I can't afford another doctor. :( We're homeless right now and money is gone. I have to wait until we settle some place. Then mum has to look at insurance for a doctor. I need multiple doctors and a hypnotist. (I have a fear of medical needles so this is our last resort to try and get me over this fear.)

I do think that it could be heart disease though. My grandmother on my mum's side had heart problems. On my dad's side, we have no idea because he was adopted. Plus, my doctor said that maybe it could be heart disease but doesn't know. I have to do blood work… Ugh. But even with the blood work, he says he may not know for sure. :(

More like a gigantic LEAP in the right direction. Well done Cara. Surviving High School doesn’t appear to be an easy thing. Two more years for me. I just survived my first year of public exams. Got some qualifications now. Yep.

I remember yearbooks. More of an American thing so I lost that when I moved out of the States. I remember people writing in other’s yearbooks. Mostly just generic stuff like “HAGS (Have a great summer) and I’ll miss you!”. You really DO remember the people who put some thought and creativity into their notes.

Go get’em at college! Lucky, I’m dying to get there. Everything I do now is in preparation for IT, I just kind of want to see how worth it it is.

    1. Just finished year 11, GCSE year, so I’d be in high school.
    2. Excited is an understatement. Living for, is a better way to describe it.
    3. Sometimes I dream I’m in college, does that count?
    4. I’m considering reading medicine at uni and then becoming a GP (rather than a surgeon or something scary important).

    1. Where are you in school? College? High School? School is for losers? Last year of university, studying physiotherapy.

    2. If you’re in high school, are you excited about college? What do you aspire to do? I think I was, even though that’s a long time ago…

    3. If you’re in college, is it everything you wanted or expected? What are you studying? Uhm. I think so. Didn’t expect much! Still physiotherapy :-D

    4. Do you know what you want to do? What profession you might have interest in? Why? Yep, obviously :-) Because I love the work, I’ve done placements, it suits me perfectly. I got into it because I got injured myself :-)

    First of all – CONGRATULATIONS!

And yes this is a scary part of life, yet, as you will learn it isn’t really that big. Figure out what you really want to do, before you do it. If you make something wrong, just start over. It’s not the end of the world. Just don’t forget to live in between. And focus on the important things in life. School is not one of them.

    Good luck to you!

Congrats on graduating! I’m happy for you. I know I will be when I finally finish.
You are already packing? Oh my goodness. I’m glad you can take this blog wherever you go. :)
I’m glad you can say you have two great friends. Having none myself, I can say you rock! :)
I’m trying to make a list and tackle one thing at a time. Then I won’t get overwhelmed in the end, hopefully.
    1. High School
    2. Yeah I’m excited, at least a little bit, I’m probably really nervous. I’m going in to be a Mechanical Engineer.
    3. I want to be an astronaut. Because I want to experience that spectacular possibility.

It’s more location. :) I wouldn’t mind being a page or something. But if I could be a web designer that would be awesome.

    Hi Cara! (:
My sister just graduated, too! And she has ABSOLUTELY no idea what she’s going to study, so I guess I can sort of grip how you’re feeling (x. She’s pretty down about the fact that she might not ever see a lot of her friends again.
But, anyways, congratulations! You do seem to have a lot of interests – writing, art, music – I’m sure you’ll have a great future once you figure out what it is you’d like to study. And you have plenty of time so, really, good luck!!!

    1. Where are you in school? College? High School? School is for losers?
-School is for losers!! LOL and going to the ninth grade next year.
    2. If you’re in high school, are you excited about college? What do you aspire to do?
-Not in it CURRENTLY, but I still am excited to leave for college. To just get away from my house and be independent from my parents >.>
    3. If you’re in college, is it everything you wanted or expected? What are you studying?
    -not in college :3
    4. Do you know what you want to do? What profession you might have interest in? Why?
-Definitely music. I’d really like to be a flute teacher when I grow up, and publish my books on the side line. But I’m not sure, my dreams are constantly changing x.x

Again, congratulations and SUPER good luck!

Congratulations on graduating from high school, you deserve the high honours. :) I’m sure you missed your site, hopefully you can keep it going when you’re in college!

I didn’t move for university, I commute for an hour every day, but that’s okay. I am definitely not ready to leave everything behind at home even just for study. *_*

Our yearbooks didn’t have much space for autographs or messages so everyone got their own notebooks or they wrote on each other’s shirts and stuff. I got people to sign my guitar, it was the only thing I had!

It’s true that you find out who your real friends are. I found out who mine were… when I left high school I just thought about who I still kept in touch with and who I really knew. It just changes. But change is a good thing and graduating from high school is really a part of growing up.

It took some time for me to decide what I wanted to study in university but I finally found something. =)

    1. Where are you in school? College? High School? School is for losers?
I’m in my last Bachelor year of university, though i’m thinking about doing a Masters degree next year.
    2. If you’re in high school, are you excited about college? What do you aspire to do?
    N/A
    3. If you’re in college, is it everything you wanted or expected? What are you studying?
We don’t say “college”, but either way, university is really the best experience I’ve had so far. It’s so much harder than school but it’s also a bit more flexible and enjoyable.
    4. Do you know what you want to do? What profession you might have interest in? Why?
Probably web design or something in media or photography, I have just been interested in those fields for a while now.

Congrats on your graduation! I just happened to stumble by your website! :D It’s definitely the end of a chapter, but the start of an era!

    1. I’m starting college next month
    2. Out of high school, excited for college
    3. Not in college yet, but I’m studying psychology!
    4. I’d like to become a child psychologist, so that’s probably my concentration. I think the human mind is so interesting and there’s a lot that needs to be done with our children and teens and I’d really like to help and be a part of that field.

Hi, I just happened to run into your website after clicking through a ton of them :) I just thought I would comment on your post since I was in your position not too long ago.

Personally, in my situation, many things changed after high school. A lot more decision-making, and definitely a lot more “I have to do this for ME, because this will ultimately affect ME.” I feel that now, with all that’s happened, I see “a bigger picture” that I was ignoring when I was still in high school. I feel I really opened my eyes a lot after going to college because of the different perspectives I learned of and the added responsibilities that come with, well, growing up. And I see this as a good thing!

I think most people can relate to the whole, “I don’t know what I want to study!” And, in fact, many people end up switching majors anyway! However, switching majors can be very wasteful (time, money, classes..). Definitely be sure to take a variety of different topics to explore possible career paths (within the general ed..). And while you’re still deciding, you should probably start researching what you might want to do! Oh, and I’d like to add.. whatever it is you do, always keep in mind the salary for that career. No one likes to hear it, but it’s true. You have to know what you’re really getting into.

Alright, well you didn’t ask for advice, but I couldn’t help it! ^_^ These are all things you probably know already – or if you didn’t, you’ll figure out soon enough – but I already typed it out, so.. I’m just going to submit it anyway. :)

Good luck in college, by the way!

Hey Cara! How have you been? Have you had a good summer?

Wow, congratulations on graduating high school! That must be really exciting. Congratulations on the high honors too! :D I think everyone understands that you have been busy and that everything else comes before your blog.

I wish you the best of luck in college! I know it must be a pretty frightening experience. I got to watch my sister go to college for the first time last year and I’m sure she was a little scared too, but she got through it and she is glad she did.

My school is weird and we don’t get yearbooks until the middle of the first semester of the next year, so I don’t think we actually get to sign other people’s yearbooks. Oh well! At least nowadays we have so many ways to stay in touch with people. It’s so sweet that you have two best friends that are there for you.

I’m glad you found the college you want to go to! I know what you mean about people asking what you want to do with your life; people ask me that all the time! Personally I don’t think there is any need for me to have to have my whole life planned out. Even my parents say I shouldn’t declare a major until I’m a junior in college or something like that. Whenever people ask me I just say ‘whatever I want’. ;D I am certain that you will find out what you want to do in the next couple of years!

    1. I am still in high school!
    2. I am pretty excited about college. I think it will be fun (albeit challenging) to live on my own and be more independent. I love my parents and I am grateful for their parenting (and money!), but I have always liked it when they go out to dinner or something and I get to stay home alone. I probably just want to go to college, get a degree, and find a nice, stable career. I might get married at some point but I don’t want children. Haha, there’s my life story!
    3. Not applicable!
    4. I don’t really know. I think I’ve narrowed it down to science, Latin, or art.

congrats on graduating! Its a very exciting time but also as you said, bittersweet.
your happy to be done highschool, but you’ll miss it at the same time. Changes are coming! Youre right, around this time you usually do find out who your friends are.
I went to college for half a semester I left because I had roommate issues and the hall wasnt doing anything about it. I ended up coming home which I really missed, and took Personal Support Worker. I graduated that in July :)
What are you taking in college??
